The Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center is located on the northeast side of Rengstorff Park, accessible from Crisanto Avenue.  The Aquatics Center was opened in 1959 and is one of two aquatics facilities operated by the City of Mountain View.  The preliminary program for the replacement facility includes a new building, new wading and swimming pools, locker and shower facilities, and multi-purpose space that can be used for a variety of different purposes.

The current configuration of the building, pool, and supporting elements are not flexible and efficient enough to meet the needs of a modern municipal aquatics program.  Many elements of the current building have reached their useful lifespan and require frequent maintenance or near term replacement.   To view project Site Plan, click on image to the right.

The overarching goal is to design a community-based aquatics center that provides a variety of features which meets the needs of residents of all ages in an all-inclusive facility.  The new facility should provide a wide range of opportunities for the public to enjoy aquatics programs using equipment, and technology to ensure a clean environment with a focus on safety awareness at all times.

City Council Meeting

On the above date/time, staff is seeking approval from City Council of the schematic design and related items for the project (or as soon as the item can be heard) as part of the Consent Calendar. This is for approval of staff's and the Parks and Recreation Commission's recommendations to approve the schematic design.

All members of the City Council will parcticpate in the Council Meeting by video conference, with no physical meeting location.  Please visit mountainview.legistar.com for meeting agenda and information about submitting public comments beginning on Friday, October 23, 2020.

On January 16, 2020, City staff presented three scope options to the Parks and Recreation Commission (PRC) comprising of varying sizes of lap pools and recreational elements. After staffs' presentation and hearing comments from the public, the PRC voted to recommend that City Council adopt "Option 2", a 10 lane - 25 yard x 8 lane - 25 meter pool with a larger recreational/leisure pool, as the preferred scope. Subsequently, at a City Council study session on February 25, 2020, Council directed staff to begin the conceptual design phase using "Option 2" as the scope. Staff returned to the PRC on May 27, 2020, in which the Commission moved forward a recommendation to Council to proceed with the schematic design of "Option A".

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Before design approval by City Council, there have been several opportunities in Fall 2019 for community members to attend open house-style workshops and other public meetings to share their thoughts and provide feedback. The initial workshops were an opportunity to provide input on the project goals and programmatic elements of the planned replacement of Rengstorff Park Aquatics Center.
