Additional rebate information: 

QuitCarbon:  Rebates for electrification projects, including a heat pump water heater. You must complete the process through QuitCarbon and use a qualifying contractor to receive.

• $100 rebate for the first clean energy upgrade (heat pump, heat pump water heater, electrical upgrades, solar/batteries, insulation)
• $200 for the second clean energy upgrades, limited to two upgrades and $300 per customer

IRS Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit: If you made qualified energy-efficient improvements to your home after Jan. 1, 2023, you may qualify for a tax credit up to $3,200. The credit equals 30% of certain qualified expenses.

• Up to $2,000 per year for qualified heat pumps, water heaters, biomass stoves or biomass boilers
• Up to $1,200 for energy efficient property costs and certain energy efficient home improvements

Clean Tech CA Rebate: Rebates for electrification projects, including a heat pump water heater. Must work with eligible installer or contractor.

• Heat pump water heater < 55 gallon = $1,100
• Heat pump water heater > 55 gallon = $1,800 
• Heat pump water heater income-qualified home = $3,500 total

 Golden State Rebate:  Rebates for replacing a gas-fired water heater with a heat pump water heater.

• Heat pump water heater 45-55 gallons = $700
• Heat pump water heater 55-75 gallons= $900

Income-qualifications are the same as SVCE's programs, which includes:

1. CARE or FERA enrollment,
2. Enrollment in another listed income-qualified programs, or
3. Proof of qualifying income per the below table.

If your water heater is 10 or more years old, it most likely needs to be replaced. Water heaters that are over 10 years old can inconsistently heat water and possibly flood your home. Indicators of water heater failure include: 

• Lack of hot water production
• Water leaking from the heat pump
• Corrosion in or around the unit
• Unusual noises, rumblings, or vibrations
• Rust in your water

Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel? 

Your electrician/contractor will be able to advise on your home’s ability to serve a heat pump water heater. You may need to upgrade your electrical panel at the same time as upgrading your water heater.  

Are there rebates to upgrade my panel? 

SVCE offers a $1,000 rebate for upgrading your electrical panel in addition to installing a heat pump water heater. Customers wanting to upgrade to 200 amps must apply for an exception and provide a written explanation including load calculations from the installing contractor regarding why a panel capacity upgrade above 100 amps is needed.  

2025 is the LAST YEAR you can also get a federal Investment Recovery Act tax credit, 30% of the cost up to $2,000. For example, after reimbursement of SVCE’s rebate and the tax credit, a $2,000 panel upgrade could cost $700.
