The passage of the revenue Measure G in November 2024 by over 72% of Mountain View voters was an important step toward improving the quality of life for Mountain View residents. This measure created a new tier to the existing property transfer tax for properties sold for over $6 million.
Recognizing the many needs of the City, the Council adopted programmatic goals and a revenue allocation plan for Measure G proceeds. The allocation includes 35%-40% toward public safety facilities, followed by parks, open space, and biodiversity initiatives, including beautification efforts (30%-35%), affordable housing (20%-25%), and other government services (5%-15%). This includes road maintenance, bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements, and homelessness efforts, among other things. Based on the first full year-to-date sales data, Measure G revenues will currently provide about $5.1 million in support for these important goals.
As a City, our goal is to maintain our high quality of life by providing essential public services that the Mountain View community needs and values. We have a proud history of fiscal prudence at City Hall by sticking to a balanced and transparent budget process and maintaining a AAA bond rating.
Looking to the future, there are still many larger-scale, longer-term projects that remain unfunded and would be transformative for the Mountain View community.
The community has indicated that there are additional critical infrastructure improvements they would like to see for our city's streets, roadways, public buildings, housing, and parks.
In hearing this community feedback, the City of Mountain View has identified these essential needs for us to build the Mountain View of Tomorrow:
- Streets and Roads: Upgrading streets, fixing potholes, improving road maintenance, mitigating traffic, and adding safety improvements for drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists
- Infrastructure: Enhancing critical public infrastructure to make Mountain View a desirable place to live for current and future generations
- Public Safety: Bringing aging fire stations and paramedic facilities up to today's standards to improve emergency response
- Affordable Housing: Developing housing, including for low- and middle-income individuals, couples, and families, to make living in Mountain View more affordable
- Parks: Adding new parks and open spaces to increase outdoor access for residents
Over the coming weeks, the City is exploring options for increasing funding to address these community needs. This may include a General Obligation Bond measure. The City Council is anticipated to consider the available options at the Tuesday, June 23, meeting.
In the meantime, the City looks forward to working with the community to address these critical infrastructure needs and public projects for Building the Mountain View of Tomorrow Together.
