The Parks and Recreation Commission was established to assist in the planning of parks and recreation facilities and activities while working with local schools and other public and private entities to achieve a vibrant network of parks, recreation opportunities. functioning facilities and open space. The Commission consists of five members.

The general functions for the Parks and Recreation Commission as stated in the Council Advisory Bodies Handbook include:

  • Develop policy, goals, and specific implementation plans regarding parks and recreation issues for the City.
  • Evaluation matters of park acquisition and development within the framework of the General Plan.
  • Monitor issues concerning parks and recreation and communicate them to the City Council, public agencies, and citizens.
  • Act as the Heritage Tree Board in resolving City forestry issues, and make recommendations to the City Council.

The Commission also serves as Urban Forestry Board, which hears appeals and makes recommendations regarding heritage tree and street tree concerns.

The Community Services Department supports the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Meetings

The Parks and Recreation Commission regularly meets the second Wednesday of every month from September through June at 6:00 p.m., with the exception of the January meeting which is held on the third Wednesday of the month.

Advisory bodies such as the Parks and Recreation Commission are volunteer positions and serve in an advisory capacity to the City Council.
