A Mountain View man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after he allegedly brought a woman back to his apartment and assaulted her.
On Jan. 8 just after 9 am, a sergeant on patrol was flagged down by a group of people in downtown Mountain View.
The group told our sergeant that they had been looking for a woman who had gone missing the night before. They had reported her missing to us, but were also looking for her. They were able to find the victim in the downtown area after she had used a good Samaritan’s phone to call her family and tell them where she was located. The victim, who was with the group, then stated she had been raped by a stranger after being separated from her husband the night before while they were out in the downtown area. The victim spoke with our sergeant and showed him the location where the assault had occurred on the 200 block of Castro Street. Officers immediately went to the location and learned that the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Henry Bermudez, also happened to work in the downtown area. They found him at his workplace and the victim was able to positively identified the man as her attacker.
Bermudez was booked on suspicion of rape, false imprisonment, aggravated kidnapping, and assault with the intent to commit a felony, among other charges. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. He is currently being held without bail.
Detectives continue to investigate this case and are concerned there may be additional victims. If anyone is a victim of Bermudez, or knows someone who may be a victim of Bermudez, please contact Detective Christine Powell at Christine.firstname.lastname@example.org.
