Man arrested in connection with BMW tire theft

A Watsonville man who was found with more than 20 stolen tires was arrested after a brief pursuit early Friday.

On Sept. 2 around 5:15 am, Mountain View dispatchers received calls of a theft in progress at the BMW dealership located on the 100 block of East El Camino Real.

Responding officers were given a detailed description of the suspect and were also told that based on video surveillance at the store, the suspect was driving a brown SUV and appeared to be stealing tires from the outside rack at the business.

One of the first patrol officers to arrive on scene saw the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Jonathan Ayala Contreras, quickly drive away from the business in a brown Chevrolet SUV. Officers were able to catch up to Contreras and a brief pursuit ensued. Less than a minute later, Contreras stopped his Chevrolet at Middlefield and Ferguson and began to run away. Officers ran after Contreras and tackled him, taking him into custody without further incident.

A subsequent investigation revealed that Contreras’ Chevy was filled with more than 20 stolen tires that were confirmed to have been taken from the BMW dealership. Contreras was arrested and booked for grand theft, resisting arrest, reckless evasion of a peace officer and multiple warrants. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.
