Teen cited in connection with bomb threats at local schools

After weeks of investigation, Mountain View investigators were able to identify a teenager responsible for making at least two bomb threats at local schools.

The teenager, due to his age, is not being identified. We are also not releasing the school that he attends.

Between Oct. 1 and Oct. 5, three bomb threats were called into local schools. On Oct. 1, Los Altos Police responded to reports of a bomb threat at Los Altos High School. On Oct. 5, Mountain View School Resource Officers and Mountain View police responded to reports of a threat that was called into St. Francis High School in Mountain View. In that call, we worked directly with school staff to ensure that all students were accounted for and that they got home safely. That same day, a third bomb threat was called into Presentation High School in San Jose.

All three calls caused serious disruptions to the school day, but thankfully none of the threats were credible.

Given the similarities in the calls, Mountain View detectives along with Los Altos and San Jose investigators began to look into these further. Shortly thereafter, Mountain View detectives working with School Resource Officers were able to identify a 16-year-old student who was allegedly connected to all three calls.

On Nov. 10, Mountain View detectives, along with representatives with the Los Altos Police Department, met with the teenager and his family and he was cited on multiple charges of making criminal threats and for making a false bomb report. He was released back into his parents’ custody. San Jose police investigators also cited the student.

We understand that these types of calls can cause concern both for students, staff and their families. We appreciate your patience as we worked to bring some closure to this case. We continue to work to ensure that all those who attend or work at any of our Mountain View schools feel safe on campus.
