“I can’t believe it.”
After months of searching, the stolen badges of a retired Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department sergeant have been returned to his family.
On Feb. 9, 2019, Mountain View officers on patrol arrested a man and a woman who were driving a stolen car near Leong Drive and Fairchild Avenue.
During a search of the car, officers recovered, among other items, badges that once belonged to a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s sergeant who had retired from the agency many years ago.
We knew these badges needed to be returned, but we soon learned through our investigation that the retired deputy had passed away. When we discovered that news, our officers continued to look to see if there was any family that may like to have the badges returned to them.
After months of searching, our officers learned that one of the sergeant’s grown daughters lived locally, and yesterday, on Sept. 2, the original patrol officer on the case, who now works in our investigative division, was able to meet with her and return her father’s badges.
Closing the loop, being able to bring closure, even all these months later, made this case.
