We wanted to alert our community to a scam we have seen pop up where callers are asking for personal information and then threatening their victims.
We have responded to more than a handful of calls for service recently where people have told us that they have received a phone call from someone who claims to be connected to local authorities or the government. In that call, the suspect insists their victims verify personal identifying information, including social security numbers, and then often states that the victims are required to pay money or that they are subject to consequences, including imprisonment.
Please note, this is a scam. No one from the government, or from any local authority, will call you and require that you verify personal identifying information, then request money. Do not ever provide your personal identifying information by phone.
If you receive a call from an unknown number, first and foremost, do not pick it up. Let it go to voicemail. If you do pick up a call from an unknown number, and you are asked questions about personal information, do not provide it. Instead, hang up.
If you receive any calls like this, you can let us know by either filing a report online at mvpd.gov or giving us a call at 650-903-6344.
