Officers on patrol in the downtown area Friday arrested a man after spotting him looking into cars and checking to see if door handles were unlocked.
Around 10:50 p.m., officers on patrol in the parking structure on the 800 block of California Street noticed a man pull into a parking space, get out of his car, and begin crawling between parked vehicles. While the man was crouched low to the ground, officers saw him look into windows and try door handles to see if anyone had left their vehicle unlocked.
Officers approached the man, identified as 28-year-old Modesto resident Rafael Alejandro Rodriguez Trinidad, and subsequently detained him. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Jail for prowling and for tampering with a motor vehicle.
As we are able, we will continue to share our department’s efforts to address auto burglary issues, including the apprehension of auto burglary suspects in Mountain View. As a reminder, our “Park Smart” campaign, launched earlier this month, highlights some of the ways in which we can all work together to help prevent these crimes of opportunity.
