A woman connected with multiple fraud cases across the state – and whom we previously arrested back in June – was arrested Tuesday on an outstanding warrant related to our case.
Sunmee Kim, 44, was arrested in June in Palo Alto by Mountain View detectives following an ongoing investigation that stemmed from a case out of our city in January.
Kim is notorious for connecting with unsuspecting victims on Korean dating sites, developing a relationship with them, then calling police and claiming that she was the victim of domestic violence. Once the accused partner was removed from the home, Kim would steal any and all valuables and also receive victim services.
Her arrest and the background on the case can be found here: https://www.mountainview.gov/news/displaynews.asp?NewsID=1322&TargetID=9
Within weeks of her arrest, Kim was once again at-large after she failed to report to her probation officer for court appearances on connected cases out of southern California.
On Nov. 5, Mountain View detectives received a tip that Kim was staying at a hotel in Burlingame. Our detectives made their way to the hotel and successfully arrested Kim. During a search of Kim, multiple credit cards belonging to additional victims were found.
Kim, who goes by other names including Sunny Jean Kim, Jean Kim, Jiin and Ashley Kim, is known to frequent KoreanCupid.com to find her victims.
“I applaud our detectives’ relentlessness as they pursued this case,” said Lt. Mike Canfield. “Kim’s abuse of services that should be used to help real victims of domestic violence is appalling, and we will do all we can to ensure she cannot ensnare and victimize again.”
