MVPD seeking additional victims in fraud case

We are looking to meet with additional victims of a woman who is known to accuse men of domestic violence, have them arrested and proceed to clear out their homes.

Sunmee Kim, 44, was arrested by Mountain View detectives in Palo Alto June 7 following an ongoing investigation that stemmed from a case out of our city in January of this year.

During that incident, Kim, who at the time went by another name, claimed her fiance had attacked her, but when asked by officers, refused to provide her full name or contact information. However, when officers met with the man Kim accused of attacking her, the man denied they were in a romantic relationship, instead stating they were only housemates. While the man was arrested at the time of the report, he was later released because it was ultimately determined that he did not commit any crime. While he was away from his home, Kim cleared out the house and left.

As officers attempted to investigate this case further, they came to suspect Kim possibly filed a false report, and the investigation was handed over to our fraud detective to look into further. During his investigation, our detective learned that Kim had victimized numerous men throughout California in a similar manner, falsely accusing them of harming her while subsequently receiving victim services. We also learned that Kim was wanted out of southern California for similar crimes in Orange and Los Angeles County, for which she was sentenced nearly five years ago.

On June 7, Kim was located in Palo Alto and subsequently arrested for the outstanding warrant out of southern California.

Our detectives believe there may be other victims, not only locally but perhaps throughout the state, who may have fallen victim to Kim’s crimes. Kim is known to go by other names, including: Sunny Jean Kim, Jean Kim, Jiin and Ashley Kim. She is also known to use to find potential victims.

Anyone who believes they may be a victim of Kim’s or who has additional information on this case can reach out to Detective Frank Rivas at
