Man killed in solo motorcycle crash on Moorpark Way

Around 1:30 am this morning, our officers responded to the 200 block of Dana Street for a report of two people tampering with cars.

One of our officers responding to the call noticed a motorcycle leaving the area of northbound Moorpark Way and attempted to stop it. As soon as our officer turned on his red lights, the motorcyclist accelerated to roughly 70 mph and drove away. Our officer, following our pursuit policy, immediately terminated the attempted traffic stop and turned off his lights and siren.

Just seconds later, our officer saw sparks in the road coming from the area where the motorcyclist was last seen driving away. Our officer drove to the location, and saw the motorcycle had crashed into a tree just off the roadway. He ran to the downed motorcycle and found the rider, whom we are only identifying as a man at this time, about 40 feet from the motorcycle. Several other officers arrived on scene and began CPR on the rider.

The rider was eventually taken to Stanford University Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased.

During our initial investigation following the crash, we learned that the motorcycle being driven by the man before the crash was an unreported stolen motorcycle from a home on the 100 block of Calderon. Our traffic unit is currently on scene, and a portion of Moorpark Way between Sylvan and the Highway 237 offramp will be closed for the next few hours while they complete their initial investigation and clear the area.
