Hello and welcome to Mountain View, our diverse, vibrant city in the heart of Silicon Valley. Whether you live, work, or visit our community, we are ready and willing to assist you. We especially appreciate hearing from our residents who often have great suggestions on new ideas or input on issues of concern.
Mountain View treasures its diverse community made up of people from all walks of life and from all over the world. We work hard to preserve that diversity so that our community is the best place it can be to experience and call home.
Our city is just over 12 square miles and home to nearly 83,000 residents, while our daytime population exceeds 125,000. The size and population of Mountain View may be modest, yet we have a prominent role on the world stage as the center of innovation for Silicon Valley, being the home to some of the most prominent tech companies in the world as well as hundreds of startups. Our vibrant downtown draws people from all over the world to visit its shops and restaurants. Our wonderful parks and network of trails delight people of all ages. As the birthplace of Silicon Valley, there are plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in the history of the technology industry and visit historic landmarks.
I am honored to serve as your Mayor as we take on the challenges and the opportunities that the year 2021 brings us. As a third generation Mountain View resident, I have seen our community transform, adapt, and change firsthand. My paternal grandparents met in Mountain View and my grandfather later owned his own small business as a flower grower, passing that tradition on to my father. I spent the early years of my life on our family’s ten-acre flower-growing nursery and am proud to begin starting the next generation of our family here. I am a Japanese, Chinese, and Puerto Rican American. I firmly believe that Mountain View’s diversity is our strength, contributing to making our city a wonderful place to live. The City Council has adopted a goal confirming Mountain View’s commitment to diversity and inclusion – to “promote strategies to protect vulnerable populations and preserve the socioeconomic and cultural diversity of the community.” These are core values in our community, and we reflect these values in the work we do for residents every day. I am serving my first term on the City Council and served as Vice Mayor in 2020.
I remain committed to all four of the Council’s current two-year goals for fiscal years (FY) 2019-20 and 2020-21, as noted below.
Thank you for all that you have done for our collective community and all the sacrifices that you have already made. I have renewed hope in this coming year. There is much work to be done but I am heartened by what we have already accomplished and the change we can bring for the benefit of all in our community.
