Patients and witnesses stated a Prius was being charged in an enclosed space at the W Middlefield Rd address. It was determined the odor was coming from the Prius’ battery and the vehicle was unplugged and the battery was removed from the vehicle.
The smell was first reported to Nuro management at 10:30 AM and the Nuro Depot Manager evacuated the building. The building was declared safe for reentry by the Nuro employee after lunch. At 12:30 PM the first signs and symptoms of illness were reported to Nuro management. Between the two locations, a total of nine Nuro employees requested evaluation by the MVFD.
City of Mountain View Fire Hazardous Materials team members conducted tests and quickly determined that the building was in fact safe for occupancy.
A total of five patients were transported to local hospitals and four patients elected not to be transported and refused further care.
