(Mountain View, Calif.) — The City of Mountain View is offering $2,000 for the best smartphone app to improve the community. Through June 1, anyone at least 14 years old may submit any app idea to improve the community on any smart device platform at www.MountainView.gov/AppsChallenge. A community showcase of the top 10 ideas will follow in August, and residents will get to vote on their favorite pitch.

In addition to the top prizewinner of the City’s first apps challenge, second place will received $1,000, and $500 will go to the third best idea. “We live in a city of smart and innovative people. It just makes sense to tap that brainpower to identify a need and offer a solution to fill it,” explained CIO/Information Technology Director Roger Jensen. “We’re looking for original, commercially viable ideas that will have a positive impact on Mountain View.”

Although a working prototype is required for the community showcase in August, the MV Apps Challenge webpages provide links to many free developer tools that do not require coding skills. To submit your app ideas and get more information on the rules and selection criteria, visit www.MountainView.gov/AppsChallenge.
