Registration for the 2022 Academy is now underway for Chinese residents

Mountain View, Calif. — The City of Mountain View is hosting its first Chinese Language Civic Leadership Academy beginning in April. The 2022 Academy registration for the free, eight-week long program is now open through Tuesday, March 1 for Chinese Mountain View residents to apply. The Academy is designed to improve participants’ understanding of local government and City services.

“I am thrilled that our Multicultural Engagement Program has expanded and that this year, the City of Mountain View will add a Chinese Language Civic Leadership Academy in addition to our Spanish Language Civic Leadership Program. This is an important way to help our diverse community members feel valued, be more engaged and increase their understanding of how local government works,” said Mayor Ellen Kamei. “Mountain View aims to be a community for all and, as a Japanese, Chinese and Puerto Rican American, I encourage our Chinese residents to take advantage of this program, learn as much as they can and get involved in our city.”

Here are details about the 2022 Chinese Language Civic Leadership Academy:

  • Meets every week on Thursdays, 6:30–8:30 p.m.
    April 21–June 4, 2022
  • Hybrid approach for meetings with most sessions held virtually through Zoom videoconferencing and some potentially held in person, dependent on public health guidance.
  • Program held in Chinese (Mandarin) and English.
  • Space is limited to 18 participants.
  • Registration is open through Tuesday, March 1.
  • View application form (available in Chinese and English).

The Chinese Academy is modeled after the successful Spanish Language Civic Leadership Academy, which completed its fourth year of operation last fall. Each session is led by staff from City departments and includes information on each department’s core service function, major activities, programs and project overview. The program also features interactive exercises and group discussion.

Through the program, participants are encouraged to increase their civic engagement, leadership and volunteerism in the community. The Academy also prepares individuals to serve on City Council advisory bodies and committees.

For more information including how to apply to the program, visit the Chinese Academy webpage or call the City’s Multicultural Engagement Program team at 650-903-6145.
