Mountain View, Calif. — The City of Mountain View is pleased to announce the winners of the Mayor for a Day contest. They are:

Elementary School Mayor for a Day
Aanya Raychaudhuri
3rd grade, Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary School

Middle School Mayor for a Day
Dhruv Vijay
8th grade, Blach Intermediate School

Mayor Ellen Kamei selected the two winning Mayor for a Day entries, with one elementary and one middle school-aged recipients. She will recognize Aanya Raychaudhuri as the Elementary School Mayor for a Day at the Oct. 12 City Council meeting. Raychaudhuri will read her essay in which she stated, “If I were mayor for a day, I’d help the environment.” She also wrote she would start building houses near schools and businesses as well as near public transportation.

At the Oct. 26 meeting, Dhruv Vijay will be recognized as the Middle School Mayor for a Day. In his essay, Vijay wrote that he has lived his entire 13 years of life in Mountain View and has benefited by being part of the city’s socioeconomic and cultural diversity. He said, “If I were mayor for a day, it would be like any other day, but I would get a chance to highlight the resources that Mountain View has that promote this diversity.”

“I was delighted by the spirited responses given by Mountain View’s youth about what they would like to accomplish if mayor for a day,” said Mayor Kamei. “Through the contest, I wanted to inspire young people to start thinking about civic issues and how they can make a difference in our city.”

The contest was open to elementary- and middle school-aged Mountain View residents who wrote up to a 500-word essay about what Mountain View would be like if they were mayor for a day.
