Man Dies from Injuries Sustained when Hit by a Car
Contact : Liz Wylie

On November 7, 2011, at 5:39 p.m., Mountain View police officers responded to a report of a car that hit a man on El Camino Real at the intersection of El Camino Real and The Americana.  The man was transported to Stanford Hospital with life-threatening injuries and died later that same evening.

The initial investigation shows that the 78-year-old male driver (from Sunnyvale) of a 1997 white Toyota pickup truck was turning from The Americana onto eastbound El Camino Real when he struck the 91-year-old Mountain View man who may have been trying to cross the street.  It is unclear at this point in the investigation if the male pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk or not, nor is it clear who was at fault and what factors may have been involved.

The male pedestrian was transported to a local hospital but died later that same evening as a result of the injuries.  The driver of the pickup truck stayed at the scene of the collision and cooperated with the investigation.  Drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been a factor.

There were almost no witnesses at the scene when officers arrived.  Given the time of day and the area where the accident occurred, traffic investigators believe there were many witnesses.  The MVPD is seeking information from those witnesses to help determine what caused the collision.  Anybody with information is asked to contact Traffic Sergeant Bryan Albarillo at 650-903-6733.

In an effort to find witnesses, Officers and volunteers will be handing out flyers to drivers in the area from 5-6 p.m. tonight, Nov. 8, 2011.  There will likely be some traffic delays as flyers are distributed.  The name of the deceased male is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
