Report a Crime or Incident

Use 9-1-1 to report all emergencies and crimes that are taking place right now. 9-1-1 is the only way to ensure immediate police attention.

Certain non-urgent crimes can be reported online, using secure forms. Urgent matters or crimes with suspect descriptions should not be reported online.

Note: Crime Location
Crime location determines where a crime is reported. If a crime took place outside Mountain View, report it to the police department/sheriff's office for the location it occurred in. When uncertain where the crime occurred, contact the department where you live.

Mountain View non-emergency crimes can be reported 3 ways:
  1. Telephone. See numbers at the right.

  3. Online (only for certain crimes).
Crimes Reportable Online
  • Theft of property.
  • Abandoned vehicles (on public property only).
    For private property: see City Code Enforcement, or call: 650/526-7713.
  • Minor vandalism (damage less than $400).
  • Bicycle theft.
  • Vehicle break-in.
  • Lost property.
  • Suspicious person or vehicle. Please report by phone, if occuring now: 650/903-6395.
Not Reportable Online
Identity Theft You must come to the police department, with your ID, to report identity theft.
Vehicle Theft Call non-emergency incidents: 650/903-6395.
Illegal dumping, front yard storage, posting of signs, and other city ordinance violations Contact City Code Enforcement, or call: 650/526-7713.
Abandoned vehicles (on private property) Contact City Code Enforcement, or call: 650/526-7713.

Required Information
Before an online report will be accepted, MVPD requires identifying information from the reporter, because:
  1. The District Attorney's office requires complete victim identification before considering a case for prosecution.
  2. MVPD must report crimes to state and federal agencies that require complete victim identification.
  3. If a victim wants a copy of a police report, MVPD must verify their identity before releasing it. (Copy fees apply.)
  4. Requiring this information helps eliminate false reports.
The information you provide is confidential. It can only be shared with individuals who have a legal right to access it.

  • Sex
  • Age
  • Race
  • Drivers license number
  • Social security number
Online Reporting Instructions
  1. Use online reports only for the crimes/incidents indicated. If what you wish to report does not fit these forms, please report it by telephone or in person.
  2. Only use these forms to report incidents that occurred in Mountain View. If it occurred elsewhere, contact that location's police agency.
  3. Please complete as many report fields as possible. If you have only partial information (e.g. part of a license number or one detail of a person's description), please give us whatever you have!
  4. If you need to report more than one type of incident, please complete a separate form for each.
  5. Fields with asterisks '*' are mandatory and must be completed for report acceptance.
  6. After completing your report, please print a copy for your records.
