MVPD's Explorers are young citizens (ages 14-21) who volunteer to assist the department in providing police services to the community. The program is a great way to explore a future career in law enforcement, or just an enjoyable way to provide community service. It's also a terrific opportunity to learn about leadership, teamwork and responsibility.
Explorers attend an 8-session academy where they receive training in:- Patrol procedures
- First aid
- Radio communications
- Search and rescue
- Criminal law
- Traffic control
The Explorers Program also sponsors social functions, field trips and tours. Explorers go on ride-alongs with officers and may assist them in the field. Some of the duties Explorers perform include:- Traffic control
- Community and special event support
- Child fingerprinting
- Equipment maintenance
- Crime prevention projects
- Assistance with police dogs training program
- Assistance with youth programs
- Tobacco and alcohol decoy programs
Explorers meet once a month, on a weekday evening. At meetings, Explorers discuss business, schedule activities, and participate in training. MVPD provides Explorers with all necessary equipment.
