Hazardous Materials Information

The information provided by the Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) is used by the Fire Protection Engineer to assist in quantifying the hazardous materials, per hazard class and method of storage per hazard class, in a building or building area.

The type of hazardous material, the amount that is stored and the way that it is stored or used all assist in determining the appropriate occupancy classification of the building or building area. Providing this information when you submit your plans will make it possible for us to serve you more efficiently.

The information provided may also assist in determining whether the amounts are exempt from being considered a hazardous (H) occupancy. Areas such as laboratories, manufacturing and assembly areas, storage areas, auto body and repair shops, etc. are just a few examples of places where hazardous materials might be used or stored.

(Please note that all projects requiring the completion of a Declaration of Exemption or Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) are required to complete the HMIS.)

If you are uncertain as to whether your project requires the completion of a Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement, please contact the Building Inspection Division at (650) 903-6313 or the Hazardous Materials and Environmental Safety Division at (650) 903-6378.
