City-Wide Garage Sale & Community Yard Sale
Welcome Sellers! By participating in these sales, you will be helping our community keep reusable items out of the landfill and conserve natural resources. By the end of the sale, you should also have extra space in your cupboards and a few extra dollars in your pocket.
What's the difference between the garage sale and the yard sale? The garage sale is held at homes throughout Mountain View and typically has larger items such as furniture and appliances on one weekend. The yard sale is held at Rengstorff Park where you will find smaller items and it is held the next weekend.
Advertising
The City will advertise both the garage sale and the yard sale in newspaper classifieds around the Peninsula and South Bay. It will also be advertised on cable television, in a banner over El Camino Real, and on several garage sale websites. Advertising is provided at no charge, however, there is a space charge for the Community Yard Sale at Rengstorff Park. Because of print deadlines, registration closes approximately 2-3 weeks before the event.
Maps & Address List
On the Friday before the City-Wide Garage Sale, the map and address list will be posted online here, published in the Mountain View Voice newspaper (available at news stands), and printed copies can be found outside City Hall in the plaza (see Garage Sale Maps link on the left-hand side for more detail). City Hall is the only location for printed maps. Printed Maps are usually available at 12 noon on Friday.
Online Shopping
Shoppers will be able to search online for City-Wide Garage Sales by street, neighborhood, multi-family sales, sale category, and "notable" items identified by sellers. We encourage you to have your neighbors register for the garage sale or to hold a block sale so that your sale can be registered and noticed by buyers. If you and your neighbor don't have enough items for a sale at your home, just combine them together at one location and register as a multi-family sale, which will also be highlighted on the maps and address lists for shoppers.
Plant Quarantine
Please do not sell or give away plants at the garage sale or community yard sale unless it is to a resident within Santa Clara County. As of February 25, 2010, the Department of Agriculture have updated their restrictions to allow non-commercial, home-grown fruits, vegetables and plants to move within the quarantine area. Homeowners are urged to self-inspect plants for evidence of small hles or signs of feeding damage caused by a caterpiller that becomes the brown apple moth.
This pest destroys, stunts, and deforms young seedlings; injures deciduous fruit-tree crops, citrus, and grapes and can spoil the appearance of ornamental plants. Please also note that all plants may be affected because the pest can be carried on any type of plant, whether a cactus, rose bush or yard trimmings. There are few exceptions to this restriction such as plants purchase from a retail (store) outlet because they undergo regular inspections. For more information and to see the latest map on the quarantine areas, visit the County Department of Agriculture website at www.sccgov.org/portal/site/ag/ or telephone 408-918-4600.
Garage Sale "How-to" Tips
Consider the following resources in planning your sale. Because there are hundreds of homes participating, do not be discouraged if shoppers don't arrive early. Shoppers have a lot of ground to cover and may come in "waves" throughout the day. The sale is advertised from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Saturday. If you plan to be open longer on Saturday or on Sunday too, please post a sign on your lawn.
Signs
Please post signs only on private property with the owner's consent. Posting signs on City utility poles, street or signal light poles, and median strips is illegal and the City does not provide sign removal services. If you do post signs, please be sure to use blue "painter's tape" to avoid damaging the paint. Be sure that signs do not encroach in the travelway or block the vision of drivers or pedestrians. Be safe. Keep track of your sign locations and remove signs promptly when your sale is finished.
