City-Wide Garage Sale & Community Yard Sale
Welcome Sellers! By participating in these sales, you will be helping our community keep reusable items out of the landfill and conserve natural resources. By the end of the sale, you should also have extra space in your cupboards and a few extra dollars in your pocket.
What's the difference between the garage sale and the yard sale? The garage sale is held at homes throughout Mountain View and typically has larger items such as furniture and appliances. The yard sale is held at Rengstorff Park where you will find smaller items. For 2010, the Citywide Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010; and the Community Yard Sale at Rengstorff Park will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2010.
Advertising
The City will advertise both the garage sale and the yard sale in local newspapers, on cable television, with a banner over El Camino Real, online and on several garage sale websites. Advertising is provided at no charge, however, there is a space charge for the Community Yard Sale at Rengstorff Park.
Maps & Address List
On April 30, 2010, the map and address list of City-Wide Garage Sales at homes will be posted online here, published in the Mountain View Voice newspaper (available at news stands), and printed copies can be found outside the main lobby entrance to City Hall across from the Performing Arts Center. Sorry, we will no longer be distributing printed maps at local coffeehouses, grocery stores, the Library, Community Center or Senior Center.
Online Shopping
Shoppers will be able to search online for City-Wide Garage Sales by street, neighborhood, group sales, or for "notable" items identified by sellers. We encourage you to have your neighbors register for the garage sale or to hold a block sale so that your sale can be registered and noticed by buyers. If you and your neighbor don't have enough items for a sale at your home, just combine them together at one location and register as a multi-family sale, which will also be highlighted on the maps and address lists for shoppers.
Plant Quarantine
Please do not sell or give away plants at the garage sale or community yard sale even if to another resident within our quarantine area. No plants may be sold or given away because Mountain View is located within the light brown apple moth quarantine area designated by the California Department of Food and Agriculture to prevent the spread of the moth. This pest destroys, stunts, and deforms young seedlings; injures deciduous fruit-tree crops, citrus, and grapes and can spoil the appearance of ornamental plants. Please also note that all plants within the quarantine area are affected and are restricted from movement within or out of the area because the pest can be carried on any type of plant, whether a cactus, rose bush or yard trimmings. There are few exceptions to this restriction such as plants purchase from a retail (store) outlet because they undergo regular inspections. For more information and to see the latest map on the quarantine areas, visit the County Department of Agriculture website at www.sccgov.org/portal/site/ag/ or telephone 408-918-4600.
Garage Sale "How-to" Tips
Consider the following resources in planning your sale. Because there are about 200 homes participating, do not be discouraged if shoppers don't arrive early. Shoppers have a lot of ground to cover and may come in "waves" throughout the day. The sale is advertised from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Saturday. If you plan to be open longer or on Sunday too, please post a sign on your lawn.
